Farm Manager
Location: Southeastern Connecticut

 

Farm Manager of Regenerative Sustainable Nonprofit Giving Garden provides a 12-week Community Shared Agriculture donation program for 60, elderly food insecure over a six-month season. The giving garden is designed to support our mission of growing nutritionally dense vegetables to improve food security in the community. Commitment to full season minimum, mid-March through mid-October for 30 hours per week with ability to extend contract if mutually agreed by management and independent Farm Manager contractor. The 10 thousand sqft no till regenerative garden has a Hoop House, apple trees, and well water irrigation. Responsible for garden planning, weekly work schedule, implementing the plan, seeding, transplanting, daily weeding, bed and crop management, integrated pest management, harvesting, and overall oversight of the farm. Applicants must be  familiar and comfortable using equipment like Broad-fork, seeders, and backpack sprayers for foliar feeding. MUST have a valid driver’s license with clean record, be able to lift 50 pounds and at least 2 full seasons' experience working on a CSA vegetable farm.

Must not be a smoker due to Tobacco Mosaic Virus risk

Qualifications:

Education: Direct Regenerative Production Farm lead or manager experience for at least 2 full season Direct Hoophouse Farm experience desired for at least 1 full season

Experience with regenerative and sustainable farming and produce handling practices Education in Agriculture with focus in natural/regenerative farming or in-door greenhouse production is a plus but is not required. A combination of related skills and education will be accepted

 

Collaborative: Works collaboratively with Co-directors and Farm Assistant. Supports a strong team by applying their diverse skills and perspectives to achieve common goals. Willing to instruct assistant on daily assignments to accomplish weekly plans.

 

Problem Solving: Ability to proactively assess challenges and quickly identify solutions in collaboration with Co-Directors and assistant

 

Plans & Aligns: Is able to follow basic instructions, procedures, plan, and prioritize work to meet commitments aligned with farm goals; Create a plan for the farm from preparation of site to growing successional crops to weekly harvest and CSA packaging to end of season clearing and winterizing preparation.

 

Self-motivated: Cooperative, solid work ethic, and flexible; Positive attitude, agreeable disposition Eagerness to learn and willingness to receive changes constructively.

 

Technical: At least two-years’ experience sustainable/regenerative farming practices on a production farm Vegetable production and greenhouse production experience desired but not required Knowledge of and passion for sustainable, regenerative agricultural practices Farm planning experience and working knowledge of overall farm operations and seasonal planning

Knowledge of harvesting, handling, storage, and delivery techniques for a wide variety of perishable crops required Valid driver's license and clean driving record required

Able to safely lift 50 pounds required

Willing to work in diverse and sometimes challenging weather conditions for work hours required

Willing to work independently and adapt to schedule changes as required by farm production schedule and weather shifts impacting work required.

Strong interpersonal skills for effective relationship management with internal & external business partners / customers
